Histology: Respiratory System Flashcards
What are the layers of the trachea?
- Mucosa
- Submucosa
- Hyaline Cartilage - C-shaped
- Adventitia
What types of cells are found in the tracheal mucosa?
Ciliated pseudostratified columnar epithelium
Which of the bronchi is larger?
Right is wider and more vertical than the left
What are the layers of the primary bronchi?
Similar to trachea:
- Mucosa
- Submucosa
- Hyaline Cartilage
- Adventitia
What are the layers of the secondary and tertiary bronchi?
- Mucosa
- Submucosa
- Hyaline Cartilage - cartilage plates
- Adventitia
What are the layers of the bronchioles?
- Mucosa - Clara cells with no cilia which replace the goblet cells
- Smooth Muscle
- Adventitia
What is missing in the bronchioles that is in the bronchi?
No cartilage
What are dust cells?
Alveolar Macrophages
Which area of the bronchus is predominantly effected by asthma?
Submucosa
Function of Clara Cells
This cell secretes glycosaminoglycans to protect the bronchiole lining.
Function of Goblet Cells
This cell secretes gel forming mucins, which are the major component of mucus.
