Caesar's De Bello Gallico 1.6 Flashcards
Erant omninō itinera duo, quibus itineribus domō exīre possent:
There were only two routes, by which routes they were able to leave from home:
unum per Sequanos, angustum et difficile,
one through the Sequani, narrow and difficult,
inter montem Iuram et flumen Rhodanum,
between the Iura mountains and the Rhone river,
vix quā singuli carri ducerentur,
scarcely by which single carts might be led,
mons autem altissimus impendebat,
moreover a very high mountain was overhanging,
ut facile perpaucī prohibere possent;
so that easily very few would be able to prevent;
alterum per provinciam nostram,
the other through our province,
multō facilius atque expeditius,
much easier and unimpeded,
propterea quod inter fines Helvetiorum et Allobrogum, quī nuper pacatī erant,
because between the territories of the Helvetians and the Allobroges, who had been recently pacified,
Rhodanus fluit isque nonnullīs locīs vadō transitur.
the Rhone flows and this is crossed in some places by a shallow.
Extremum oppidum Allobrogum est proximumque Helvetiorum finibus Genava.
Geneva is the farthest town of the Allobroges and nearest to the Helvetian territories.
Ex eō oppidō pons ad Helvetios pertinet.
From this town a bridge reaches to the Helvetians.
Allobrogibus sese vel persuasurōs, quod nondum bonō animō in populum Romanum viderentur, existimabant
They were thinking either they would persuade the Allobroges, because not yet did they seem in good mind onto the Roman people,
vel vī coacturos ut per suos fines eos ire paterentur.
or they would compel them by force so that they allow them to go through their own territories.
Omnibus rebus ad profectionem comparatīs diem dicunt,
With all things prepared for departure they declare a day,
