95. Teasing boars (use, operations) Flashcards
General considerations for teasing boars?
General considerations
• Accurate detection of oestrus
o AI and embryo transfer programs
- Effective reliable detection method involves the use of teaser animals
- Animal incapable of impregnating females but normal mating or copulation behaviour will occur
- Sexually mature, young virgin animals are the best candidates for teaser animals
The ideal teaser animal should be?
The ideal teaser animal should
- Be free from transmissible diseases
- Have a high degree of libido
- Be small enough to use for immature females yet large enough to use for mature females
- Have a distinct colour or colour pattern that is different than most of the herd
- Be friendly and non-aggressive
The ideal procedure should be?
The ideal procedure should
• Be simple and rapid
• Not induce pain, to maintain libido
• Produce minimal postoperative complications
• Require a minimal postoperative recovery period
Name the procedures used for teasing boars?
Procedures
Block the flow of semen
• Vasectomy
o Vas deferens is ligated and a section is removed
• Epididymectomy
o Epididymis is ligated and resected
Prevent penile penetration
- Preputial translocation
- Penopexy
o Penis sutured to prevent extension
• Penectomy
o Part of penis is removed
• Preputial block
o Mechanically blocked
Hormones
• Females and castrated males have also been used as teasers by altering their sexual behaviour with
hormones
Vasectomy pre surgery procedures?
Vasectomy
- 50-100kg weight
- Dorsal recumbency with the rear legs extended
Presurgical procedure
- Withhold food for 24 hours and water for 12 hours
- Prepare the scrotum and surrounds
o Clip hair
o Surgical scrub and prep
Anaesthesia
- General
- Local
o Infusion of 2% lidocaine in the spermatic cord with enhance anaesthesia but may make identification
of the vas deferens difficult
Vasectomy surgical technique?
Surgical technique
- Pull the scrotum back between the rear legs
- Force the testicles to the bottom of the scrotum
- Make a 5-8cm incision over the spermatic cord between the testicle and the inguinal ring
- Isolate and exteriorize the spermatic cord
- Identify the vas deference within the spermatic cord by palpation and visual inspection
- Stabilize the vas deferens within the spermatic cord, and make a 1cm incision through the vaginal tunic to
expose the vas deferens
- Isolate about 3cm of the vas deferens
- Place two ligatures 3cm apart on the exposed vas deferens
- Remove the section of the vas deferens between the 2 ligatures
- Replace the ends into the spermatic cord
- Close the spermatic cord with one suture of absorbable material or may be replaced without suturing
- The skin incision in closed in 2 layers
o SC layer with simple continuous of absorbable
o Skin with multiple patterns of non-absorbable
• Repeat the procedure on the opposite vas deferens
o Some surgeons prefer to remove the opposite testicle
Postoperative care vasectomy?
Postoperative care
- Allow 6 weeks or 6 ejaculates to evacuate viable semen before using the animal as a teaser
- Remove skin sutures in 14-21 days or allow them to slough spontaneously
Epididymectomy general anaesthetia?
Epididymectomy
• General anaesthesia
o Sedation azaperone 1mg/kg IV
o Induction/ maintenance
§ Xylazine 1mg/kg + ketamine 5mg/kg IV or IP
§ Diazepam/ midazolam 1mg/kg + ketamine 5-10mg/kg IV or IP
Epididymectomy procedure?
- Piglets are 10-21 days old
- Skin incision in the scrotum over the tail of the epididymis
- Carefully open the vaginal tunic with scalpel or scissors to expose the epididymis
- Take care to avoid incising the epididymis or testicle
- Bluntly dissect the tail of the epididymis from the testicle
- Transect and remove the tail of the epididymis
- Suture the skin
- Allow drainage of the incision
- Repeat the procedure on the opposite side
o Some surgeons prefer to remove the opposite testicle
