107.Aims and methods of farrowing synchronization at the pig farm Flashcards

1
Q

What are the aims of synchronized farrowing?

A

Synchronized farrowing

Aims

  • Labour management aspects –> we want to avoid “weekend” farrowing, or farrowing at the same time
  • Max 2 to 3 days before expected term
  • Oestrus normally occurs spontaneously in gilts and mature females that are not pregnant or lactating
  • Once oestrus cycles have begun, they normally occur every 18-21 days

Q

Method for synchronization?

A

Methods

  • We can give PGF2α, 10-15 mg im., there will be farrowing 24 hours later
  • Oxytocin is more precise but more risky
  • When gilts are exposed to boars between 160-180 days old

o 70-80% of gilts exhibit oestrus within the next 28 days

o 40% of gilts showing oestrus 10-14 days later

• When gilts are given PG600 and boar exposure between 160-180 days old

o 70-80% of the gilts exhibit oestrus within the next 28 days

o 800% of oestrus periods occur 5 and 10 days later
