Q

Approach to sedation and general anaesthetia?

A

Approach to sedation and general anaesthesia

• Withhold food for at least 6 hours

o 12 hours for abdominal surgery

  • Don’t withhold water
  • Minimize stress

o Malignant hyperthermia

• Restrain

o Pig board and snare

• Hot condition

o Dark pig = heatstroke

o Pink pig = sunburn

• Cold condition

o Hypothermia

• Protect eyes from dust and sunlight

Q

Inhalational Anaesthetia?

A

Inhalational Anaesthesia

  • Laryngospasm is common
  • Narrow glottis
  • Long soft palate
  • Wide opening of the mouth
  • Sharp teeth
  • Interesting laryngeal anatomy

Q

Im injection

A

IM

Accurate IM is difficult

  • Neck muscle
  • Triceps
  • Epaxial lumbar muscle
  • Gluteal
  • Quadriceps

Intra-fat (IF) injection

• More common

Poor response

Dose was insufficient or delivered into fat?

Q

IV injection?

A

V

• Auricular vessels (ear vein)

o Not easy to locate in small-ear breeds

o Gilts, sows, boars

• Jugular vein

o From 30kg + weight

• Vena cava cranialis

o Piglets from 2kg to 30kg weight and for adults

o Injection on the right side

o Anterior vena cava on the left

§ N. vagus on the left

Q

Lumbosacral epidural?

A

Lumbosacral Epidural

  • Castration, obstetrical or perineal surgeries
  • Sedation is needed
  • Like in dogs but in very large and fatty pig is difficult
  • Patellae- vertical line- line crosses the spin- 2-3cm caudal lumbosacral space
  • Local (skin) infiltration is needed
  • 5-10cm epidural needle
  • 5 or 6 lumbal vertebrae, between the last 2 vertebrae
  • 50kg pig, 10ml 2% lidocaine, duration of the block is 1-2 hours
  • Combination

o Xylazine injection 1mg/kg + 10mg 2% lidocaine= 10ml

§ 6 hours duration

  • Heart rate
  • MM colour
  • Skin temperature
