Q

Special anatomical and physiological characteristics of swine?

A

Special anatomical and physiological characteristics of swine

• Piglets:

o poor thermoregulation, no brown fat, weak hair

• Adult:

o 50% of heat eliminated via respiratory tract

Q

Housing effect on respiratory problems?

A

Housing:

• Cold surrounding (esp floor) > lungs, pleura get cold > phagocytosis decreases > decreased cellular activity

and cortisol production > pneumonia, pleuritis

  • No straw + wet (concrete floor) = increased risk
  • Warm floor will be required

Q

Microclimate effect?

A

Microclimate:

  • Temperature: neutral zone, hot (hyperventilation), cold (hypoventilation), decreased phagocytosis
  • Dust: dry feed, dust < 5 um gets into the alveoli, can also contain bacteria and protein - increasing

sensitization (alsorisks for humans as well)

  • Gases: NH3 - oedema, H2S – pneumonia
  • Humidity: optimal 70-80%, if too dry - vulnerable mucosal membrane, if too wet - harmful NH3 effect
  • Ventilation: optimal 0.1-0.3 m/s

Q

Measures of enviromental hygiene?

A

Measures of environmental hygiene

  • Improve as many factors as possible: more economical and less medication
  • Dust, mycotoxin, NH3, other toxic gases > immunosuppressive effect > less effective vaccination
  • Every 100g lung and pleural lesions = 10% higher feed requirement (each 1% affected lung tissue = additional

1.2 days fattening time until market)

Q

Ethiological factors Infectious and non-infectious?

A

Etiological factors:

Infectious:

• Bacteria:

o Bordetella bronchiseptica, Pasteurella multocida, Actinobacillosis pleuropneumonia, Hemophilus

parasuis, Corynebacterium pyogenes, Salmonella typhisuis

• Mycoplasma:

o M. hyopneumoniae, M. hyorhinis

• Viruses:

o swine influenza

• PRRS, Circovirus:

o Aujeszky’s disease virus (herpes virus), swine fever (togavirus)

• Parasites: Ascaris larvae

Non-infectious:

• dust, mycotoxins, ammonia and other gases
