Q

Incomplete extension of the elbow?

A

Cause: abnormal traction
The two joints (elbow and shoulder) remain flexed
Large foetus
Weak uterine activity
Occurrence: calves
Diagnosis: head is beyond the hoofs
Prognosis: relatively good if not wedged in
Treatment:
A.non bloody method
• Hand- head is repelled, two legs pulled
• Hand and obstetrical chains/snares
• Hand abs Kühns crutch

B:Bloody Method: Partial fetotomy

Q

Shoulder flexion Posture?

A

Cause: shoulder joint remains flexed

Occurrence: relatively rare, often in piglets and puppies

Diagnosis:no legs in the birth canal

Prognosis: good, of the foetus is small and maternal pelvic cavity is large

Treatment:

A.non bloody method

• In two phases; 1. Grab radius and create carpal flexion

2.solve carpal flexion

  • Hand
  • Hand and obstetrical chains/snares
  • Kühns crutch
  • In small foetus traction without reposition

B. bloody method

• Partial fetotomy-head and one leg together

Q

Carpal flexion posture?

A

Cause

Occurrence: foals more often, calves less frequent but possible

Diagnosis: one or both carpal joints are flexed

Advanced, invaded, jammed in, or wedged in

Prognosis: depends on how far the foetus has entered the pelvic cavity

Treatment:

A.non bloody treatment

• Hand (metacarpus should be pushed dorsally and cranial, hooves should be lifted into the pelvic brim by

protecting them with cupped hand

  • Hand and obstetrical chains/snares
  • Hand and Kühns crutch

bloody method
• Partial fetotomy (at least one bone row should remain)

Q

Foot nape posture?

A

Cause: long extremities

Occurrence: foals, small ruminants, calves

Diagnosis: legs above the head/neck

Prognosis: bad / doubtful

Treatment:

A.non bloody method

• Hand- legs placed behind the head

B. bloody method

• Partial fetotomy- amputation of the head and leg in the carpal joint
