88. Congenital skin diseases in swine Flashcards
What are the Main Congenital skin diseases in swine?
- Epitheliogenesis imperfecta
- Dermatosis vegetans
- Pityriasis rosea
Describe Epitheliogenesis imperfecta?
Epitheliogenesis imperfecta
• Congenital hypoplasia of the skin on certain areas
o Legs, flanks, spine
- Usually, unhealthy litters only affect one animal at a time
- Euthanasia in case of extensive skin imperfection, even without significant skin imperfection
Describe dermatosis vegetans?
Dermatosis vegetans
• Landrace, recessive trait
• Growing lesions, first papules, the plaques, finally papillomatosis-like lesions, club feet
• Apparent at 3 weeks after birth, most piglets die by week 6
• Survivors have interstitialis pneumonia with giant cells
Describe Pityriasis rosea?
Pityriasis rosea
- Sporadic, unknown origin, genetic background (landrace?)
- Multiple piglets from the same litter can be affected
- Manifests at 8-14 weeks of age
- Lower abdomen and chest, inner thighs, sometimes on the back, neck, and legs
- First small erythematous papules, which rapidly expand to form a ring (collarette) with distinct raised and
reddened borders, center of the lesion is flat and covered with a bran-like scale (pityriasis)
• No pruritus, spontaneous healing, but secondary infections can occur
o S. hyicus
• Usually no need for treatment, but prevent secondary infection
