75. Small ruminant medicine: rupture of the prepubic tendon, rupture of the uterus, evisceration through vaginal tear, rectal prolapse Flashcards
Rupture of the prepubic tendon Incidence?
Rupture of the prepubic tendon
Incidence
- in older multigravida ewes
- during the last 2 weeks of pregnancy
Treatment of the rupture of the prepubic tendon?
Treatment
• assistance is frequently necessary because the lambs are not correctly
presented
• after lambing → euthanasia
Rupture of the uterus causes?
Rupture of the uterus
Causes:
- Two-sided hip flexion
- Excessive manipulation, forced traction
Clinical signs of rupture of the uterus?
Clinical signs:
- pulse, abdominal breathing, rapid pulse, vocalisation
- frequent abdominal straining
- arterial blood at the vulva
- shock and/or peritonitis
Treatment of rupture of the uterus?
Treatment
• Laparotomy
Prognosis
• Repair of the uterine tear is often possible
Uterine prolapse incidence?
Uterine prolapse
Incidence:
• immediately after lambing or within 12–48 hours
Cause of uterine prolapse?
Cause:
- large singleton foetus + prolonged 2. stage of parturition
- unskilled assistance → pain, abdominal straining→ dystocia
Treatment of uterine prolapse and management?
Treatment:
• epidural anaesthesia
• reposition
• Buhner method
• after reposition restraining → invagination?
• AB, NSAID
• probability of re-prolapse → breeding
Management:
• timely correction of the dystocia by a veterinary surgeon
Evisceration through vaginal tear incidence?
Evisceration through vaginal tear
Incidence:
• last month of the pregnancy
Cause of evisceration through vaginal tear?
Cause:
- often within 30 minutes of concentrate feeding
- excess body condition
- triplet pregnancy
- high-fibre diets are thought to be risk factors
Evisceration through vaginal tear Management?
Management:
- CS(C-section)
- shooting the ewe → lambs can survive (5 min.)
Rectal prolapse incidence?
Rectal prolapse
Incidence: combined with vaginal prolapse
Cause of evisceration through vaginal tear?
Cause:
- excess body condition
- triplet pregnancy
- very sort docked tail
Treatment of evisceration through vaginal tear?
Treatment:
- Epidural anaesthesia
- Dexamethasone ↔ abortus or induction of lambing
- Reposition
- Suture pattern → 1,5 cm opening or
- Amputation → >15 cm
