62. Anatomical features of the bovine hoof. Locomotion scoring Flashcards
1
Q
Anatomy of the hoof?
A
Anatomy of the hoof
• 3 main structures
o Hoof horn (outer layer)
o Corium (production of hoof horn, blood
vessels)
o Pedal bone/coffin bone (P3)
• White line: border of sole and laminar horn (hoof wall)
– sensitive
• Digital cushion – sensitive
2
Q
Weight distribution?
A
Weight distribution
- New-born calf – equal bet legs and digits
- Growth, change in weight bearing – increased pressure on HL lateral digits, FL medial digits – change in hood
shape and problems more frequent on hooves with more stress
3
Q
Breeding?
A
Breeding
- Dairy herds – breeding plan
- Natural hoof constitution – hoof wall at 45 to 60 degrees with the ground
4
Q
Lameness?
A
Lameness
- Frequent problem, multifactorial
- Individual loss- herd level
- Economic loss - decreased DM intake, milk yield: other diseases
- Can develop over a long time – diagnosis comes too late
- Infectious – non infectious
5
Q
Locomotion scoring describe the scale?
A
6
Q
Most common cause of lameness?
A
Most common causes of lameness
• Non infectious
o Laminitis
o Sole ulcer
o White line disease
o Tow necrosis
o Heel erosion
o Morphological defects
o Hard/soft feet
