Per os administration in piglets?

A

Per os (PO) drug administration

To give colostrum, formula (milk powder) or dextrose (instant source of energy)

If there is a suckling reflex

• Human baby bottle (2.5DL), but the openings must be enlarged

o 14G needle or 50mm nails

• You must teach the piglets for artificial feeding

If there is no suckling reflex

  • Stomach tube 4mm
  • Lubrication: colostrum or paraffin oil
  • Above the tongue, swallowing reflex
  • Tube into trachea is rare

o Violent cough

• Resistance felt

o Tube in the stomach

• No more than 20ml at one time

o Repeat every 2 hours

  • Discontinue use if signs of gastric upset occur
