Per os administration in piglets?
Per os (PO) drug administration
To give colostrum, formula (milk powder) or dextrose (instant source of energy)
If there is a suckling reflex
• Human baby bottle (2.5DL), but the openings must be enlarged
o 14G needle or 50mm nails
• You must teach the piglets for artificial feeding
If there is no suckling reflex
- Stomach tube 4mm
- Lubrication: colostrum or paraffin oil
- Above the tongue, swallowing reflex
- Tube into trachea is rare
o Violent cough
• Resistance felt
o Tube in the stomach
• No more than 20ml at one time
o Repeat every 2 hours
4 drugs used for Per os administration
- Aspirin
- Fenbendazole
- oxytetracycline
- phenylbutazone
Aspirin info?
Aspirin
- 10mg/kg every 6 hours
- Analgesic, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory
- Give with food
- Discontinue use if signs of gastric upset occur
Fenbendazole?
Fenbendazole
• 5mg/kg once daily for 3 days
• Anthelmintic
• Repeat treatment in 3 weeks and again in 3 months
Oxytetracycline?
Oxytetracycline
- 10-20mg/kg
- Label withdrawal meat 28 days
- Do not use in young animals
- Broad spectrum AB
Phenylbutazone?
Phenylbutazone
- 4mg/kg daily
- Anti-inflammatory
