4.25 Cerebrum 1 Flashcards
What is the hypothalamus part of?
diencephalon
What is a major thing the hypothalamus plays a part in?
stress: fear, lack of food, anxiety, etc
What does the hypothalamus stimulate?
- sympathetic neurons
- pituitary gland
When the hypothalamus stimulates sympathetic neurons, what does it cause the release of?
norepinephrine
Norepinephrine is the precursor to _______
epinephrine
How does the hypothalamus stimulate the pituitary gland?
by releasing ACTH
What is ACTH and what does it affect?
- adrenocorticotropic hormone
- affects adrenal glands (both cortex and adrenal medulla)
The adrenal cortex releases:
- aldosterone
- glucocorticoids
The adrenal medulla releases:
epinephrine
What does aldosterone release cause?
⬆︎ BP
What is a major glucocorticoid?
cortisol
What do glucocorticoids do?
⬇︎ t-cell function
⬇︎ blood flow to GI
⬇︎ insulin uptake » blood sugar spike
With ⬇︎ insulin uptake, what is the end result (along with blood sugar spikes)
don’t make as much insulin
With overall decreased function caused by glucocorticoids, what happens?
propensity for diabetic conditions and weight gain
What type of response does epinephrine release from the adrenal medulla cause?
same response as cortisol
