What is migration?
the movement of people from one place to another with various intentions such as settling temporarily or permanently (voluntarily or forced)
When vouluntary migration occur?
when a person choses to migrate (when you move to a new town for work or university)
What is forced migration?
when a person feels like they have no option but to move, thier life may be threatened if they do not.
What are some general examples of forced migration?
War
Coup (civil war)
Famine, drought
Natural disasters
What might a person who is forced to leave their country become?
a refugee
How does UNHCR define forced migration?
someone who is unable or unwilling to return to their country of origin due to fear of persucution for race, religion, nationality, member of particular social group, political opinion.
What is an asylum seeker?
a person who has left their country and is seeking protection from persecution and serious human rights violations in another country but hasn’t been yet legally recognised as a refugee and is waiting on if their asylum claim is accepted
What is internal migration?
when a person moves within a country and does not cross any state boundaries
What is external migration?
Where a person crosses a boundary out of their state (international migration)
What might a person become is their migration is international?
An emigrant from your home country and a immigrant in your new country
