Refers to the degree at which an individual engages with the place they identify with
For example supporting the local football team, voluntary work.

How will length of residence affect engagement
New migrants or students may have less strong attachment than long standing residents
What is influence (regeneration)
A feeling of being able to play a part in a place
How will deprivation affect engagement
More deprivation (temporary housing) may feel less (at home) than owner occupiers
How will gender affect engagement
Women may feel less able to do certain things.
May also be more active if they have children at home.
How will ethnicity affect engagement
Non-white british may differ in their views because of local antipathy or acceptance
If there aren’t many people of a certain ethnicity they may struggle to adapt to the community
What is membership to a place
A feeling of belonging, familiarity and being accepted
Why might conflicts occur in communities? (Regeneration)
Conflicts can occur among contrasting groups in communities that have different views about priorities and strategies for regeneration, these have complex causes ( lack of political engagement and representation, ethnic tensions, inequality and lack of economic opportunity)
