Topic 2 - Slides Flashcards
What is the meaning of Phagocytosis?
Cell eating
What is the meaning of Pinocytosis?
Cell drinking
What is Vesicular Transport?
Using vesicle to move substances into or out of the cell
What are Vesicles composed?
The phospholipids and may contain proteins
What is Endocytosis?
A form of vesicle transport which uses vesicles to bring molecules into the cell
What is Phagocytosis?
When cells engulf bacteria or large particle such as cell debris from damaged tissue
How does Phagocytosis work?
A large particle is surrounded by Pseudopodia and folds around the surface of the particle engulfing it completely. After it is surrounded, a vesicle pinches off from the membrane and is internalized by the cell
What is the Vesicle in Phagocytosis known as?
Phagosome
After Phagocytosis ingests the Phagosome, where does the Phagosome go?
It migrates in the cell and fuses with lysosomes in the cell which contain digestive enzymes
How does Pinocytosis work?
The membrane of the cell begins to indent or invaginate forming a pocket with material from the cell exterior and brings them in the cell
What are some differences between Pinocytosis and Phagocytosis?
- Pinocytosis does not use Pseudopodia
- Pinocytosis is non specific
- Pinocytosis does not engulf large particles
- Pinocytosis take up ions or nutrients
How does Receptor Mediated Endocytosis work?
Receptors on the plasma membrane bind to a ligand. Clathrin proteins are recruited and link to the ligand receptor complex. The complex forms a cage structure. The membrane then indents forming a coded pit which then pinches off to become the coded vesicle. The vesicle loses its coat of clathrin and is now free to fuse with other organelles
What happens after Clathrin proteins are removed after Receptor Mediated Endocytosis?
They are recycled back to membrane to be used again
