ANS Lecture 2 Flashcards
Where are the cell bodies of the Preganglionic fibres found?
In the CNS
Where are Ganglia found?
Outside the CNS
What are the targets of Postganglionic fibres?
Smooth muscles, Cardiac muscle and various glands
Where is the location of the cell bodies of preganglionic fibres in the Parasympathetic ANS?
In the Cranial Region and In the Sacral Region
Where is the location of the cell bodies of preganglionic fibres in the Sympathetic ANS?
The Thoracic and Lumbar Region
What types of matter is in the center of the Center of the Spinal cord?
Grey Matter
What is the meaning of Dorsal?
The back
What is the meaning of Ventral?
The front
Where are the cell bodies of Somatic Nerves found?
In the ventral horn in the gray matter of the spinal cord
Where do the Nerves of the Somatic system go from the Ventral horn?
They go from the ventral horn to the ventral root and join the spinal nerves and through the various branches that the somatic nerves goes to a muscle
Where do cell bodies of Preganglionic Parasympathetic cells lie in the cranial and sacral region?
In the Lateral Horn of the Grey matter of the spinal cord
Where does the Preganglionic fibre from the Parasympathetic division go from the Lateral Horn?
They go from the lateral horn to the ventral root and join the spinal nerve all the way to the ganglion and communicates with the ganglion
What is the length of the Preganglionic fibre versus the Postganglionic fibre in the Parasympathetic nervous system?
The preganglionic fibre is a lot longer than the postganglionic fibre
What do Postganglionic Muscle fibres target?
Smooth muscle, cardiac muscle or glandular tissue
What does the term Divergence refer to?
When one preganglionic fiber branches with multiple postganglionic fibers
What does Convergence refer to?
When multiple preganglionic fibers communicate with one postganglionic fibre
Where is the nucleus of Preganglionic Sympathetic Nervous systems found?
In the Lateral horn of the Grey matter
Where does the Preganglionic neuron of the Sympathetic nervous system go after leaving the Lateral Horn?
It joins the ventral root and it joins the White Ramus Communicans
What joins the White Ramus Communicans?
The Preganglionic fiber of the Sympathetic nervous system
What is the White Ramus Communicans?
A communicating branch between the spinal nerve and ganglion in the Sympathetic chain
What happens if the Preganglionic fiber of the Sympathetic nervous system joins the White Ramus and then goes on the Gray Ramus?
It can terminate in the first ganglion it comes to and rejoin the spinal nerve through the Gray Ramus Communicans and become the sympathetic postganglionic fiber which travels to smooth muscle
What is the relative length of the Preganglionic and the Postganglionic fibers in the Sympathetic nervous system?
The Preganglionic fibers are relatively short while the postganglionic fibers are relatively long
What happens if the Sympathetic Preganglionic fiber does not terminate in the sympathetic chain?
It can leave the sympathetic chain and go to a pre vertebral or collateral ganglion and communicate with a postganglionic fibre
What are the 3 possibilities for the Presynaptic ganglion leaving the lateral horn of the spinal cord?
- It can go to the White ramus communicans and join the gray ramus communicans and go to smooth muscle
- It can move up or down the sympathetic chain and meet a postganglionic neuron and go to a smooth muscle
- It can leave the sympathetic chain and go to a prevertebral or collateral ganglion and go to a smooth muscle
