Muscle 9 Flashcards
What is the immediate source of energy for muscle contraction?
ATP
How many molecules of ATP does each round of cross-bridge cycling consume?
One molecule
What can ATP be synthesized from?
Lipid and carbohydrate metabolism
What is a supplemental source of energy for muscles?
The phosphorylation of ADP by creatine phosphate creating ATP
What does Creatine Kinase do?
Transfers the high energy phosphate from creatine phosphate to ADP creating ATP
What do muscle fibers build up during rest?
A concentration of Creatine Phosphate
What can White muscle fibers do during severe exercise conditions?
They can convert glycogen into ATP
What are the two types of muscle contraction?
Isometric and Isotonic contraction
What happens in Isometric contraction?
The length of the muscle remains constant and the force produced is measured (there is no shortening of the sarcomeres)
When will Isometric contraction occur?
When you are trying to lift a load that is too heavy
What occurs in Isotonic contraction?
Muscle contraction remains constant as muscle length changes
What kind of contraction are body movements?
They are Isotonic
What is a twitch?
The response of a muscle to a single action potential
What occurs during a twitch?
There is a transient contraction phase followed by a relaxation phase
What is summation?
When a second action potential is initiated before the first contraction has completely relaxed in a twitch
