ANS Lecture 1 Flashcards
What are the two major communication systems in the body?
The nervous system and the endocrine system
What is the relative speed of the Nervous system and the Endocrine system?
The nervous system acts quickly (milliseconds or seconds)
The endocrine system acts relatively slowly (minutes, hours, or days)
How does the Endocrine system take messages throughout the body?
Using hormones that travel largely in the blood
What is the division of the Nervous system?
The CNS and PNS
What is the Central Nervous system comprised of?
The Brain and Spinal cord
What is the Peripheral Nervous system divided into?
Autonomic and Somatic nervous system
Which system innervates the skeletal muscles?
The somatic nervous system
What is the Autonomic Nervous system subdivided into?
The afferent and Efferent pathway
What does the Afferent Pathway do?
Takes messages from places in the body to the CNS
What is the efferent pathway of the ANS divided into?
- Sympathetic
- Parasympathetic
- Enteric nervous system
What does the ANS have an important role in?
Homeostasis
What is Homeostasis?
The regulation which maintains a relative constancy of the internal environment in the body in the face of change in the internal and external environments
How many neuron links are in the Somatic Nervous system?
One
How many neuron links are in the Autonomic Nervous System?
Two-neuron link
Which neurotransmitter activates muscles?
Acetylcholine
