Muscle 1 Flashcards
What is the function of muscle?
Harvest chemical energy in the form of ATP to produce force and movement
How efficient is muscle?
25-30% efficient, the rest of energy is lost as heat
What is the relatively of power to weight ratio of muscle?
Muscle has a high power to weight ratio that exceeds any man made machine
Which proteins in muscle convert energy stored in ATP into sliding of protein filaments?
Contractile proteins
What other cells, besides muscle, are contractile proteins found?
In white blood cells
What have a number of immune cell deficiencies be linked to in relation to muscle?
Mutations and disruptions of the actin cytoskeleton
How are actin filaments critical in macrophages and dendritic cells?
Actin remodelling is critical for motility and phagocytosis
What are the three muscle types identified by?
- Structure
- Location function
- Manner of innervation
What is skeletal muscle attached to?
The bones of the skull
What is the contraction of skeletal muscle responsible for?
Supporting and moving the skeleton
Where is smooth muscle found?
Around hollow tubes and organs in the body, including stomach, intestine, urinary bladder, uterus, blood vessels, and airways in the lungs
What may contraction of smooth muscle do?
Propel contents through hollow tube and organs, regulate the diameter of a tube
What does Cardiac muscle do?
Generates the force necessary to propel blood throughout our bodies
Which muscle types are Striated?
Skeletal muscle and cardiac muscle
Which muscle type is non-striated?
Smooth muscle
