ANS Lecture 9 Flashcards
What is the exception to the rule about sympathetic nerve endings?
Sweat glands are innervated by sympathetic nerve endings but ACh is the neurotransmitter and not adrenaline or noradrenaline
Which parts of the Nervous system use Nicotinic receptors?
Sympathetic and Parasympathetic receptors
What is an Agonist in terms of drugs?
Something that binds to a receptor and mimics the normal transmitter
What is an Antagonist?
A drug that binds to a receptor and prevents a normal transmitter from binding to it
What are some things that can cause Vasovagal syncope?
Prolonged standing, Heat, Severe dehydration, Pain
What occurs in the Sympathetic nervous system in vasovagal syncope?
Decreased sympathetic activity causing vasodilation and decreased resistance which causes a decrease in blood pressure and blood flow to the brain
What occurs in the Paraympathetic nervous system in vasovagal syncope?
•Decreased heart rate and cardiac output causing decreased blood pressure and flow to the brain
What is responsible for Myasthenia gravis?
Antibodies attacking nicotinic receptors
What do Antibodies to nicotinic receptors in autonomic ganglia do?
Cause Autonomic failure
Why does Autonomic failure occur when antibodies attack autonomic activity?
Because transmission in all autonomic ganglia, sympathetic and parasympathetic, is blocked
What are the way drugs can interfere with transmitter?
- Synthesis, storage and release interfered with
- Inactivation or uptake can be interfered with
- Receptors of the transmitter can be interfered with
