Surgical Planning Flashcards
1
Q
What 6 things does a successful surgical plan depend on?
A
- An understanding of the procedure – principles and rationale behind different treatments
- Sound knowledge of normal anatomy and physiology
- Experience or at least a good understanding of all procedures that may potentially be involved, and a realistic judgement of your ability to perform them.
- Thorough patient evaluation and consideration of complicating factors-– you might be planning a surgery, but also need to consider any concurrent medical problems, and plan anaesthesia and analgesia as part of the ‘whole package’
- Good communication with the owner throughout
- Reflection on the outcomes of the procedure

Q
What is the 4 point system to surgical planning?
A
- Planning (what aspects of the patient and procedure do you need to evaluate and why, owner communication)
- Preparation (plan what you need, make sure you include anaesthesia, medication, equipment, assistance, practising procedures / techniques, getting back-up)
- Procedure (review principles of surgery and use these to minimise complications)
- Case review (what worked, what didn’t work, what would you change next time)
