Surgical Planning Flashcards

1
Q

What 6 things does a successful surgical plan depend on?

A
  1. An understanding of the procedure – principles and rationale behind different treatments
  2. Sound knowledge of normal anatomy and physiology
  3. Experience or at least a good understanding of all procedures that may potentially be involved, and a realistic judgement of your ability to perform them.
  4. Thorough patient evaluation and consideration of complicating factors-– you might be planning a surgery, but also need to consider any concurrent medical problems, and plan anaesthesia and analgesia as part of the ‘whole package’
  5. Good communication with the owner throughout
  6. Reflection on the outcomes of the procedure

Q

What is the 4 point system to surgical planning?

A
  1. Planning (what aspects of the patient and procedure do you need to evaluate and why, owner communication)
  2. Preparation (plan what you need, make sure you include anaesthesia, medication, equipment, assistance, practising procedures / techniques, getting back-up)
  3. Procedure (review principles of surgery and use these to minimise complications)
  4. Case review (what worked, what didn’t work, what would you change next time)
