Otitis available treatments and choice Flashcards
What is Osurnia – florifenicol?
Florfenicol is a bacteriostatic antibiotic which acts by inhibiting protein synthesis. Its spectrum of activity includes Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria including Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MIC90 of 8 μg/ml)
Some Pseudomonas isolated are not sensitive to florifenicol
What is Aurizon - marbofloxacin?
marbofloxacin, a synthetic bactericidal agent belonging to the fluoroquinolone family that acts by inhibiting DNA gyrase. It exhibits a broad spectrum of activity against Gram-positive bacteria (e.g. Staphylococcus intermedius) and against Gram-negative organisms (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli and Proteus mirabilis)
What is Posatex - orbifloxacin?
Orbifloxacin is a synthetic broad-spectrum bactericidal agent classified as a quinolone carboxylic acid derivative, or more specifically, a fluoroquinolone. The bactericidal action of orbifloxacin results from interference with the enzymes DNA topoisomerase II (DNA-gyrase) and DNA topoisomerase IV which are needed for the synthesis and maintenance of bacterial DNA. Such impairment disrupts replication of the bacterial cell, leading to rapid cell death. The rapidity and extent of killing are directly proportional to the drug concentration. Orbifloxacin has in vitro activity against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms.
What is Surolan – polymixin B?
Polymyxin B sulfate is a polypeptide antibiotic with bactericidal activity against Gram-negative bacteria. It binds to phospholipids in the cytoplasmic membrane, whereby the membrane permeability is disturbed. This results in lysis of the bacteria.
What is Easotic - gentamicin?
Gentamicin sulphate is an aminoglycoside bactericidal antibiotic which acts by inhibiting protein synthesis. Its spectrum of activity includes Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, such as the following pathogenic organisms isolated from the ears of dogs: Staphylococcus intermedius, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus mirabilis, Escherichia coli, etc.
What is Otomax - gentamicin?
Gentamicin sulphate is an aminoglycoside bactericidal antibiotic which acts by inhibiting protein synthesis. Its spectrum of activity includes Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, such as the following pathogenic organisms isolated from the ears of dogs: Staphylococcus intermedius, coagulase-positive Staphylococcus spp. and Proteus mirabilis.
What is Canaural - Diethanolamine fusidate?
Fusidic acid (present in the veterinary medicinal product as the Diethanolamine salt) is an antibiotic which is highly active against Staphylococci, the most commonly found bacterial pathogen in otitis externa in the dog and cat. Fusidic acid has skin penetrating properties which enhances its antibacterial properties.
What is Canaural Framycetin sulphate?
Framycetin sulphate is a broad spectrum antibiotic which has been incorporated for its activity against Gram-negative organisms associated with otitis externa, in particular Pseudomonas spp. and Proteus spp.

Outline the various components of ototic creams available in UK?
How would you treat this dog:
Pluto is a 2 year old crossbred with a 4 day history of otitis affecting the right ear. There is pruritus, a yeasty odour and he is a little depressed.
Cytology shows large numbers of Malassezia and squames with a few neutrophils
The drum is intact on otoscopy and there is no ulceration in the canal
How would you treat this case:
Della is a 5 year old black Labrador with recurrent ceruminous otitis. She is presented with a green brown exudate, marked swelling & ulceration on otoscopy.
Cytology shows much nuclear streaming, some intact neutrophils and many intra- and extracellular rods. Bacteriology has been submitted, but not available at this time.
Which treatment is most suitable?
How would you treat this case:
James is a 10 year old Airedale with marked head tilt and a purulent exudate in the left external canal with very marked hyperplastic changes in the canal
Cytology shows inflammatory cells and rods
Surgery is being considered. Which treatment protocol is appropriate in the interim?
How would you treat this case:
Nina is a 10 year old atopic Labrador that has become snappy upon ear handling and will not let her owner treat the ears. Otoscopic examination showed a mild to moderate ceruminous otitis with some stenosis.
Cytology shows Malassezia & many cocci. Which treatment is most appropriate at this time?
How would you treat this case:
Bernie is a 6 year old cocker spaniel with waxy ears and no apparent inflammation or irritation.
Otoscopy shows marked waxiness in the ears, but no other signs
Cytology shows 1-2 Malassezia per high power field and many squames, but no inflammatory cells.
Which treatment is most appropriate?
