Question 1

ceperuntque consilium atque dixerunt ecce sollemnitas Domini est in Silo anniversaria quae sita est ad septentrionem urbis Bethel et ad orientalem plagam viae quae de Bethel tendit ad Sycimam et ad meridiem oppidi Lebona

Answer 1

And they took counsel and they said (ceperuntque consilium atque dixerunt), behold, there is an annual solemnity to the Lord (ecce sollemnitas Domini est…anniversaria) in Silo, which is situated to the northern region of the city of Bethel (in Silo quae sita est ad septentrionem urbis Bethel), and to the eastern region of the way (et ad orientalem plagam viae), which stretches from Bethel to Sichem (quae de Bethel tendit ad Sycimam) and to the south of the town of Lebona (et ad meridiem oppidi Lebona).

praeceperuntque filiis Beniamin atque dixerunt ite et latete in vineis

Answer 2

And they ordered the sons of Benjamin and they said (praeceperuntque filiis Beniamin atque dixerunt), go and lie hidden in the vineyards (ite et latete in vineis),

Question 3

cumque videritis filias Silo ad ducendos choros ex more procedere exite repente de vineis et rapite eas singuli uxores singulas et pergite in terram Beniamin

Answer 3

And when you will see the daughters of Silo to proceed, out of custom, to lead the dance (cumque videritis filias Silo ad ducendos choros ex more procedere), emerge suddenly from the vineyards (exite repente de vineis) and seize them (et rapite eas), every [man], every wife (singuli uxores singulas), and proceed into the land of Benjamin (et pergite in terram Beniamin).

Question 4

cumque venerint patres earum ac fratres et adversum vos queri coeperint atque iurgari dicemus eis miseremini eorum non enim rapuerunt eas iure bellantium atque victorum sed rogantibus ut acciperent non dedistis et a vestra parte peccatum est

Answer 4

And when their fathers and brothers will come (cumque venerint patres earum ac fratres), and they will begin to complain against you (et adversum vos queri coeperint—queri is “to complain”), and to scold (atque iurgari), we will say to them (dicemus eis), you all [should] have pity on them (miseremini eorum), indeed, they seized them not as by right of war (non enim rapuerunt eas iure bellantium) and victory (atque victorum), but asking that they take/seize [them] (sed rogantibus ut acciperent—sense is “when they asked to have them”), you would not give [it/them] (non dedistis), and from your part was the sin/fault (et a vestra parte peccatum est).

feceruntque filii Beniamin ut sibi fuerat imperatum et iuxta numerum suum rapuerunt sibi de his quae ducebant choros uxores singulas abieruntque in possessionem suam aedificantes urbes et habitantes in eis

Answer 5

And the sons of Benjamin did that/as they themselved had been commanded (feceruntque filii Beniamin ut sibi fuerat), and, next to their number (et iuxta numerum suum), they seized for themselves (rapuerunt sibi) of these who were leading the dancing (de his quae ducebant choros), every individual wife (uxores singulas), and they departed into their own possession (abieruntque in possessionem suam), building cities and living in them (aedificantes urbes et habitantes in eis).

Question 6

filii quoque Israhel reversi sunt per tribus et familias in tabernacula sua in diebus illis non erat rex in Israhel sed unusquisque quod sibi rectum videbatur hoc faciebat

Answer 6

The sons of Israel also returned through the tribes and families into their own tents/tabernacles (filii quoque Israhel reversi sunt per tribus et familias in tebernacula sua). In those days, there was no king in Israel (in diebus illis non erat rex in Israhel), but each one/every one did that (sed unusquisque…hoc faciebat) which seemed virtuous (rectum videbatur) to himself (sibi).
