et ab occidentali urbis parte procedere sed et alia decem milia virorum de universo Israhel habitatores urbis ad certamina provocabant ingravatumque est bellum contra filios Beniamin et non intellexerunt quod ex omni parte illis instaret interitus
And to proceed from the westerly part of the city (et ab occidentali urbis parte procedere). But also another ten thousand men (sed et alia decem milia virorum) were called forth from all of Israel (de universo Israhel… provocabant) to battle the inhabitants of the city (habitatores urbis ad certamina). And the war against the sons of Benjamin was aggravated/made worse (ingravatumque est bellum contra filios Beniamin). And they did not understand (et non intellexerunt) that untimely death approached (illis instaret interitus) out of all/every part (sense “from all sides” ex omni parte).
percussitque eos Dominus in conspectu filiorum Israhel et interfecerunt ex eis in illo die viginti quinque milia et centum viros omnes bellatores et educentes gladium
And the Lord beat them in the sight of the sons of Israel (percussitque eos Dominus in conspectus filiorum Israhel) and they slaughtered out of them in that day (et interfecerunt ex eis in illo die) twenty five thousand and one hundred men (viginti quinque milia et centum viros), all warriors and drawing the sword (omnes bellatores et educentes gladium).
filii autem Beniamin cum se inferiores esse vidissent coeperunt fugere quod cernentes filii Israhel dederunt eis ad fugiendum locum ut ad praeparatas insidias devenirent quas iuxta urbem posuerant
The sons of Benjamin, however, when they saw themselves to be below/inferior (filii autem Beniamin cum se inferiors esse vidissent), began to flee (coeperunt fugere). Which, the sons of Israel seeing (quod cernentes filii Israhel), they gave to them a place to flee (dederunt eis ad fugiendum locum), that they might come (ut…devenirent) to the prepared ambushes (ad praeparatas insidias), which they had placed next to/near the city (quas iuxta urbem posuerant).
qui cum repente de latibulis surrexissent et Beniamin terga caedentibus daret ingressi sunt civitatem et percusserunt eam in ore gladii
Who, when they rose suddenly (qui cum repente…surrexissent) from [their] hiding places (de latibulis), and Benjamin gave [its/their] backs (et Beniamin terga…daret) to the murderers (caedentibus), they entered the city (ingressi sunt civitatem) and the beat them/it in the face with swords (et percusserunt eam in ore gladii).
signum autem dederant filii Israhel his quos in insidiis conlocaverant ut postquam urbem cepissent ignem accenderent et ascendente in altum fumo captam urbem demonstrarent
The sons of Israel, however, had given a signal to these [men] (signum autem dederant filii Israhel his), whom they had set into ambushes (quos in insidiis conlocaverant), that, after they had seized the city (ut postquam urbem cepissent), they would light a fire (ignem accenderent) and by the ascending of the high smoke (et ascendente in altum fumo—altum and ascendente seem to be doing similar things here. Not sure what to make of it), they might demonstrate [that] the city was taken/occupied (captam urbem demonstrarent).
quod cum cernerent filii Israhel in ipso certamine positi putaverunt enim filii Beniamin eos fugere et instantius sequebantur caesis de exercitu eorum triginta viris
Which, when the sons of Israel had seen (quod cum cernerent filii Israhel) the station of the battle for themselves (in ipso certamine positi—not sure about that last word, “position/station”)—indeed, the sons of Benjamin thought them to flee (putaverunt enim filii Beniamin eos fugere), and they were vehemently followed (et instantius sequebantur), killing of their army thirty men (caesis de exercitu eorum triginta viris).
et viderent quasi columnam fumi de civitate conscendere Beniamin quoque retro aspiciens captam cerneret civitatem et flammas in sublime ferri
And they saw just as a column of smoke (et viderent quasi columnam fumi) from the city to rise (de civitate conscendere). Benjamin, also looking back (Beniamin quoque retro aspiciens), saw the city was captured (captam cerneret civitatem), and the flames were brought (et flammas…ferri) into the air/on high (in sublime).
qui prius simulaverant fugam versa facie fortius resistebant quod cum vidissent filii Beniamin in fugam versi sunt
They who first simulated flight/retreat (qui prius simulaverant fugam), turning [their] faces around (versa facie), they bravely opposed [them] (fortius resistebant). Which, when the sons of Benjamin had seen [this] (quod cum vidissent filii Beniamin), they turned around in flight (in fugam versi sunt),
et ad viam deserti ire coeperunt illuc quoque eos adversariis persequentibus sed et hii qui urbem succenderant occurrerunt eis
And they began to go to the way of the desert/wilderness (et ad viam deserti ire coeperunt), the adversary pursuing them there also (illuc quoque eos adversariis persequentibus). But these who set the city on fire (sed…hii qui urbem succenderant) also ran to meet them (et…occurrerunt eis).
atque ita factum est ut ex utraque parte ab hostibus caederentur nec erat ulla morientium requies ceciderunt atque prostrati sunt ad orientalem plagam urbis Gabaa
And so it was done (atque ita factum est) that out of each side/part (ut ex utraque parte—the last two words sort of doing the same thing) by [their] enemies they were slaughtered (ab hostibus caederentur), nor was there any resting (nec erat ulla…requies) for the dying [men] (morientium). They were killed and they were struck down (ceciderunt atque prostrati sunt) to the eastern region of the city of Gabaa (ad orientalem plagam urbis Gabaa)
fuerunt autem qui in eodem loco interfecti sunt decem et octo milia virorum omnes robustissimi pugnatores
They were however, who were killed in that same place (fuerunt autem qui in eodem loco interfecti sunt), 18 thousand men (decem et octo milia virorum), all most robust/hardy fighters (omnes robustissimi pugnatores).
quod cum vidissent qui remanserant de Beniamin fugerunt in solitudinem et pergebant ad petram cuius vocabulum est Remmon in illa quoque fuga palantes et in diversa tendentes occiderunt quinque milia viros et cum ultra tenderent persecuti sunt eos et interfecerunt etiam alios duo milia
Which, when they who remained of Benjamin saw [this] (quod cum vidissent qui remanserant de Beniamin), they fled into the wilderness (fugerunt in solitudinem) and they proceeded to the rock (et pergebant ad petram) which is called Remmon (cuius vocabulum est Remmon). In that flight also (in illa quoque fuga), wandering and camping in different [places] (palantes et in diversa tendentes—the latter being camping/insisting), they killed five thousand men (occiderunt quinque milia viros) and when they camped/stretched further/beyond (et cum ultra tenderent), they [still] pursued them (persecuti sunt eos), and they killed also another two thousand (et interfecerunt etiam alios duo milia).
et sic factum est ut omnes qui ceciderant de Beniamin in diversis locis essent viginti quinque milia pugnatores ad bella promptissimi
And thus it was done that all who were slaughtered of Benjamin (et sic factum est ut omnes qui ceciderant de Beniamin) in diverse places (in diversis locis) were twenty five thousand fighters, most willing/ready to/for war (essent viginti quinque milia pugnatores ad bella promptissimi).
remanserunt itaque de omni numero Beniamin qui evadere potuerant et fugere in solitudinem sescenti viri sederuntque in petra Remmon mensibus quattuor
And so there remained of all the number of Benjamin (remanserunt itaque de omni numero Beniamin) who were able to escape (qui evadere potuerant) and to flee into the wilderness (et fugere in solitudinem) six hundred men (sescenti viri). And they settled/set/sat in the rock of Remmon four months (sederuntque in petra Remmon mensibus quattuor).
