cocaine MOA
inhibits dopamine reuptake -> inc. dopamine levels at synapses, and postsynaptic receptors activated.
cocaine and tolerance
- over time dopamine stores are depleted
- fewer dopamine receptors (down-regulation)
cocaine withdrawal
causes dec. dopamine levels at synapses
amphetamine MOA
releases stored dopamine into synapses and prevents re-uptake into vesicles
-> inc. dopamine at synaptic cleft
cocaine withdrawal s/s
within 90 minutes, last 7-10 days bradycardia sleepy fatigue nausea vomiting dysphoria anhedonia (inability to feel pleasure)
amphetamine withdrawal s/s
lasts 5-7 days anhedonia (inability to feel pleasure) dec. concentration depression HA irritability suicidal thoughts
MDMA MOA
street names: ecstasy, molly
inc. serotonin in the extracellular space while depleting presynaptic dopamine stores
MDMA drug class
