Science of food, their actions, interactions and balance in relation to health and disease.

Malnutrition is universal but most common in Asia and Africa.
What can cause malnutrition?
Malnutrition can be as a result of deficient or excess intake of nutrients in relation to requirements.
What is the spectrum of nutritional status?
The spectrum ranges from severe to moderate, then mild undernutrition, normal nutritional status, overweight, obesity to morbid obesity.
What type of malnutrition is prevalent in tropical developing countries?
Under-nutrition is the prevalent type in tropical developing countries.
What are some causes of under-nutrition?
Causes include level of development, socio-economic problems, food production, food distribution, food preservation, ignorance, and poverty.
What factors contribute to under-nutrition?
Insufficient household food security, inadequate dietary intake, infections, large families, chronic illnesses, and food restrictions.
What is the current state of food production in developing countries?
There is a decline in food production, with only a fraction of the required food being produced.
What are some reasons for the decline in food production?
Reasons include rural-urban migration, disappearance of arable lands, and high population growth.
What causes severe losses in food produced by farmers?
Poor storage, processing, and preservation lead to severe losses.
What are seasonal food shortages?
Food shortages are more common during the planting season.
What can physicians do to enhance better nutrition?

To record the diet of a population or individuals in terms of breastfeeding patterns, feeding patterns, family food budgets, and mothers’ knowledge of food sources.
