Dry Cask Storage Flashcards
What provides the confinement boundary for the spent nuclear fuel from the environment?
The MPC (Baseplate, Shell, Lid, and closure ring)
What are the 3 types of heat transfer for the MPC?
- Conduction (Through the metal)
- Convection (Circulation of Helium)
- Radiated (through the shell and top)
Why do we use helium in the MPC?
- Leak detection
- Inert atmosphere to prevent chem reaction with fuel cladding / corrosion
- Cooling (Convection)
What are the functions of the MPC?
- Structural
- Nuclear criticality
- Confinement boundary
- Heat removal
- Shielding
- Fluid penetrations
When does the Loading Operations begin and end with MPC?
From first fuel assembly in the MPC to when the TRANSFER CASK is suspended from / secured on the TRANSPORTER.
When does Transfer Operations begin and end?
begins when TRANSFER CASK is on the TRANSPORTER to when the TRANSFER CASK is at its destination and released from the TRANSPORTER.
If you damage a cask confinement boundary as indicated by on contact rad readings, what is your Eplan Call?
Unusual Event EU1.1
What does the HI-Storm 100 Cask System consist of?
- HI-STORM Overpack
- Multi- Purpose Canister (MPC) – holds 32 fuel ass
- Hi-TRAC Transfer
What is the purpose of the Certificate of Compliance (CoC)?
Approves the design of the Dry Cask storage system
Tech Specs for ISFSI are found in CoC
Do you have to enter a spec if Temperature Monitoring System is working and the Delta T’s are within limits if you have blockage identified?
NO!
But should still prioritize removal of blockage
