The Cold War
United Nations (UN)

Iron Curtain
a metaphor for the wall of communism that split the East and West coined by Winston Churchill

a belief held by the Soviets that organized workers would overthrow capitalism in all countries
containment
a policy of not letting communism spread any farther created by US diplomat George Kennan
Truman Doctrine
a statement from the US based on containment that said the US would stop the spread of communist influence, especially in Greece and Turkey
Marshall Plan
a plan enacted by the US to pour money into European countries so they would not become communist, as many poor countries did, through industrialization and reducing trade barriers. It worked.
Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (COMECON)
The Soviet response to the Marshall Plan with its satellite states that did not have effects nearly as large as those of the Marshall Plan
Sputnik
The Soviet Union’s first artificial satellite that launched the Space Race
mutual assured destruction
a point reached by the US and USSR at which if either country started a war, both would be obliterated by the end of it due to their weapons and advancement
Non-Aligned Movement
a movement of countries that condemned colonialism and influence from the US or USSR, and called for a stronger UN
