Japan asserted itself in Korea, which China did not like. This led to this war, which Japan won because of their technological advances, giving them Korea and Taiwan (Formosa)

created the theory of evolution which was later used to justify racism
Social Darwinism
Argued that the spread of Europeans and whites was proof that they had “evolved” via Darwin’s theory to be superior

A famous Christian missionary from Scotland who worked to end the Sub-Saharan illegal slave trade
East India Company (EIC)
English charter and joint-stock company in the 1600s given a monopoly on English trade with India by the English government. It later expanded its influence and began imperialising.
Dutch East India Company (VOC)
Established a monopoly on much trade in Africa, including the Cape of Good Hope. They took control of most islands the Portuguese previously had control of.
