2.6 Flashcards
Environmental Consequences of Connectivity
Champa Rice
Rice breed given to China by Vietnam as tribute. Drought and flood-resistant and capable of yielding two crops per year, it helped sustain China’s rapidly growing population. Also caused terrace farming to grow, as land unusable for other crops could be terraced to sustain Champa rice.
bananas
Introduced to Sub-Saharan Africa by Indonesian seafarers who eventually settled in Madagascar. Helped population growth, especially among Bantu-speaking peoples.
sugar
Spread by Arabs. Would be in extremely high demand among Europeans.
citrus crops
Spread by Arabs
overgrazing
Too many animals, too little and. overgrazing outside Great Zimbabwe is thought to be what caused their decline
deforestation
Cutting down trees. Reduced agricultural production in Europe bc of farmland overuse
soil erosion
When soil erodes. Reduced agricultural production in Europe bc of farmland overuse
bubonic plauge
Transferred by fleas, likely by Mongol conquering and close quarters at caravanserai. Europeans suffered heavy losses. 25 million died, more deaths worldwide. This contributed to economic decline in Europe, but also made standards better for workers which would lead to economic change and eventually the Renaissance.
