Unit 7 Topic 8 Flashcards
What is sustainable development?
A concept that refers to the use of natural resources in a way that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
-A holistic approach that considers social, economic, and environmental impacts
-Seeks to balance all aspects of development that is equitable and sustainable
What are the key principles of sustainable development?
intergenerational equity, precautionary principle, polluter pays principle, principle of common but differentiated responsibilities
What is intergenerational equity?
Refers to the idea that the needs of the future should be considered when making decisions about the use of natural resources.
What is the precautionary principle?
States that when there is a risk of serious or irreversible harm to the environment or human health, lack of full scientific certainty should NOT be used as a reason to postpone measures to prevent that harm.
What is the Polluter Pays Principle?
Says that those who generate pollution should bear the costs of preventing or mitigating it.
What is the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities
Acknowledges that countries have different levels of development and capacity and therefore have their own different responsibilities in addressing global environmental problems.
How do you work towards sustainable development?
-Implementing efficient use of resources
-Promoting sustainable agriculture
-Protecting and conserving natural resources
-Promoting social equity
What is renewable energy?
Refers to energy sources that are naturally replenished on a human time scale, such as sunlight, wind, water, and geothermal heat.
What are characteristics of renewable energy?
Clean and environmentally friendly
Does not produce greenhouse gasses
Can reduce dependence on fossil fuels
What are the types of renewable energy?
solar, wind, hydroelectric, geothermal, biomass
What is solar energy?
Energy generated from sunlight using photovoltaic cells or concentrated solar power systems.
What is wind energy?
Energy generated from using wind turbines that convert the kinetic energy of the wind into electricity
What is hydroelectric energy?
Energy generated using the movement of water to turn turbines and generate electricity
What is geothermal energy?
Energy generated using heat from the earth’s core to produce electricity or to heat and cool buildings
What is biomass energy?
Energy generated using organic matter, such as wood, crops, and animal waste
