The process by which a cultural trait spreads from one place to another

A place of origin for a widespread cultural trend

What is relocation diffusion?
The spread of cultural traits that result from the migration of people bringing their culture with them
What is expansion diffusion?
The spread of a cultural trait beyond a cultural hearth apart from the movement of people
What is maladaptive diffusion?
The adoption of diffusing traits that are not practical or reflective of a region’s environment or culture
What is contagious diffusion?
Describes the rapid spread of a cultural trait to adjacent populations without regard for class, race, or any other cultural hierarchies.
What is hierarchical diffusion?
Describes a cultural trait that spreads from upper classes to lower classes.
What is stimulus diffusion?
Describes the process by which the idea behind a cultural trait stimulates a new, but related, cultural trait
What is reverse hierarchical diffusion?
Describes the process by which an idea spreads upward from lower classes to upper classes
