Unit 5 Topic 8 Flashcards
What is Von Thunen’s model?
An economic model developed in the 19th century that aims to explain the spatial organization of agricultural and how it is influenced by transportation costs
Predicts that more intensive rural land-uses are closer to the marketplace
Predicts that more extensive rural land-uses are farther away from the marketplace
What are assumptions of the von thunen model?
All land is flat
There is one, single market
All land has equal access to the market
Farmers want to maximize their profit
All of the land has similar site characteristics
Created before cars and refrigeration was made
Farmers consider the cost of the lang and the cost of transportation
There is no transportation between different zones
What is the first circle of the von thunen model?
The Market:
Where agricultural products are sold
What is the second circle of the von thunen model?
Dairy Farming:
These goods are perishable and need to be close to the market.
Higher in demand than other products
Farmland is high in cost for its demand and accessibility
What is the third circle of the von thunen model?
Forest:
Lumber is important to build homes and fuel
The Von Thunen model was made when wood was important for fuel
What is the fourth circle of the von thunen model?
Grains/Field Crops:
Requires lots of land to grow.
Relatively cheap to transport as the products made are not perishable and are light.
Products last longer than dairy products
Grains last for long periods of time and are lightweight
What is the fifth circle of the von thunen model?
Ranching/Livestock:
Lots of land is needed.
Cheaper and abundantly farther from the CBD
What is the sixth circle of the von thunen model?
Wilderness:
No commercial agriculture. Too far away from the market for a profit.
What are the circles of the von thunen model?
market, diary, forest, grain/field crops, ranching/livestock, wilderness
How did the Von Thunen model change/become outdated?
Advances in technology
Changes on what people need
Cultural/Environmental landscape has changed
