What is interdependence?

A

When two things, people, organizations, or countries are dependent on another. (The actions or conditions of one entity have an effect on the actions or conditions of the others).

What is a commodity dependence?

A

When a country has more than 60% of its total exports made up of just commodities.
These countries are usually peripheral or semi-periphery.
These countries are greatly affected by changing prices.

A

A financial incentive or payment that is given by the government to support a specific industry, company, or individual. (The goal is to promote the production of certain products or promote certain practices).

What are some characteristics of global markets/global supply chains?

A

Countries do not have to produce all of their food
Countries can have more time specializing
More economic growth
Countries are more vulnerable to global crises
Countries import a more variety of food year round
Can lead to environmental impacts, labor abuse, and inequality
Examples: Amazon, FedEx, UPS, etc.

What are some characteristics of periphery countries and farming?

A

Periphery countries often have a growing population and a growing demand for more food (Usually stage two of the DTM)
Farmers need to find a way to improve outputs and yields
Local markets are often less economically advances, forcing them to turn to foreign markets
Farmers are able to get more money for their crops which helps them buy equipment
New equipment allows for a higher yield and output
Less food is produced for the local population as more food is being exported
