What is forced migration?
An occasion when people migrate against their will, usually because of extreme push factors.
What are factors and effects of forced migration?
Can be caused by war, human rights violations, environmental disasters, poverty, government policies, health concerns, etc.
Can lead to refugees, asylums, and IDPs
What are refugees?
Migrants who flee their home and cross national borders to find safety
What is asylum?
The seeking of safety in another country
What are IDPs?
Internally Displaced Persons; People who are forced to migrate but remain within the borders of their home countries.
What is voluntary migration?
Movements by individuals or groups who choose to relocate, often for economic or social reasons rather than being forced by conflict or persecution
What are the different types of voluntary migration?
transnational , transhumance, internal, chain, step, guest workers, rural-to-urban migration
What is transnational migration?
Migrants who move but simultaneously retain strong ties to people at home.
They keep in touch using communication technologies like phones or emails or by sending money home in the form of remittances.
Migrants may move back and forth between the destination country and their home country.
What is transhumance?
The seasonal migration that herders make with their livestock
What is internal migration?
People who migrate within the borders of a country
What is chain migration?
Describes how one person’s migration can lead to further migrations among their friends and family.
What is step migration?
Migration that occurs in stages or small checkpoints along the way.
What are guest workers?
A temporary form of migration in which people travel to a new country to work for a specialized amount of time
What is rural-to-urban migration?
People moving from rural areas to urban areas.
