What is the TFR?
Total fertility rate; The number of average children a mother will have in a country
What is women’s status?
The level of equality between men and women that exists in a particular society
What are traditional gender roles?
Women’s social status is lower than men, and women are mainly seen as the bearers of children
What are egalitarian gender roles?
Women’s status is equal to men
What are facts women in the developed world?
Women are more educated and are in the workforce
Better health care and access to contraception
TFR is usually around 2.0
What are facts about women in the less developed world?
Women are less educated and do not work out of the house
Bad healthcare and less access to contraception
Higher TFRs
Example: A TFR above 5.0 in Sub-Saharan Africa
What can elevate women’s status?
Access to Education
Family Planning: birth control pills or intrauterine devices (IUDs) that prevent pregnancy
Employment: Having a job takes time away from taking care of children
Political: Having the right to be in the government, to vote, and to speak out
What is Ravenstein’s 6th law?
Women are more likely to migrate within their home country while men are more likely to migrate to other countries
