The practice of acquiring territories and settling there to exert political, economic, and social control over the area.

Spreading religion
Exploitation of land and labor
Expanding influence throughout the world
Diffusion of culture
What is imperialism?
The idea of growing an empire by exerting force over other nations to gain economic and political power without establishing settlements.
What are some impacts of colonialism and imperialism?
Global diffusion of different religions, languages, cultures, resources, people, ideas, etc.
Creation of new countries
Reshaped political boundaries
Reshaped political and economic systems
Forced migration of enslaved people
Created an imbalance of power between countries
What are some examples of imperialism and colonialism?
Berlin Conference, WWI, WWII, cold war, post-cold war
centrifugal vs centripetal force
A force that pulls people away from each other
A force that unites a country and pulls people together
What is balkanization?
When a state breaks up into different states (often due to conflict within the state)
Examples: Yugoslavia, Sudan, etc.
What is devolution?
The transfer of power from a national government to regional governments (power is broken up and spread between lower organizations).
What is decolonization?
The process by which a colony becomes independent of the colonizing country
What is a proxy war?
Conflicts where third parties fight on behalf of more powerful parties that supply them
