What is imperialism?
The process by which a powerful state enacts policies in order to extend power over another state, either by force or diplomacy
What is colonialism?
The process by which a powerful state established settlements in another place for the purpose of economic or political gain
A violent form of cultural diffusion
Example: Christianity spreading throughout the world by missionaries
What is neocolonialism?
This term has emerged in recent years because imperialism can be pursued through the assertion of political, economic, and cultural influence.

What is a lingua franca?
A common language adopted by people of many different languages in order to facilitate communication
What is a creole language?
A creole language is created when two or more languages are combined to form a new, distinct language.
What is a pidgin language?
A language that developed when two or more different languages meet in one geographic region, usually a result of trading among people who speak different languages
What are some characteristics of a pidgin language?
There are no native speakers
These languages arrive quickly as a compromise between multiple languages
Contains simple vocabulary from a “dominant” group’s language
Contains the simpler grammar of a language
Usually restricted in use when first made
Other pidgins can become expanded to become a lingua franca
