What is disintegration?
When a state breaks up into smaller parts. (The state ceases to exist in its current form and new states are created). Example: South Sudan becoming independent from Sudan
What is democratization?
A process through which a political regime becomes more democratic
What is sovereignty?
The ability of a state to govern its territory free from control by its external political entities
What are supranational organizations?
An alliance which consists of multiple countries, traditionally three or more, that work together to achieve common goals or address specific issues/challenges that impact the states.
What are political/military based supranational organizations?
Often seek to maintain political stability across a region or around the world.
Example: United Nations, African Union, North Atlantic Treaty Organization
What are economic based supranational organizations?
Often seeks to promote economic prosperity. States may lose some of their powers in approving laws based on trade, industrialization, tariffs, etc.
Example: European Union, ASEAN
What are environmental based supranational organizations?
Specific goals that protect the world’s natural resources
Example: The Arctic Council
What can challenge sovereignty?
Technology: share information, bring opportunities, new jobs and sharing of ideas
Social Media: Spread information, propaganda, cyber threats
Foreign Intervention: military intervention, economic sanctions, diplomatic pressure, etc.
Internal Conflict: Civil wars, revolutions, etc.
What was the Arab Springs?
Revolutions across Northern Africa and the Middle East. Facebook and Twitter were the main weapons used. Many countries saw the downfall of their dictators such as in Egypt, Tunisia, and Yemen.
