What is placemaking?
The way people modify the landscape in order to live in a particular location.
What is a sense of place?
The act of filling a geographical location at any scale with meaning and significance
What is placelessness?
Defined by geographer Edward Ralph as the loss of uniqueness of a place in the cultural landscape so that one place looks like the next.
What factors make up a sense of place?
language, dialect, religion, ethnicity
What is a dialect?
A regionally distinct way of speaking a language
What is an ethnicity?
A common cultural background that creates a sense of belonging among a people
Centripetal vs Centrifugal
-Characteristics that unify a country/provides stability
-Characteristics that cause division in a country/destabilizes a place
What are some examples of centripetal forces?
Religion: Hinduism in India
Language: Spanish in Central America
Ethnicity: Han ethnicity in China
What are some examples of centrifugal forces?
Religion: Division between the Shi’a and Sunni Islam
Language: Bills declaring English as the official language of the U.S.
