What are regions?
A geographic unit which shares some unifying principle. The unifying principle could be cultural, economic, or an activity.
What are features of regions?
Geographers define regions
Regions don’t come in standard sizes
Regions can be of any size
What are the different types of regions?
Formal (uniform, homogenous), functional (nodal), perceptual (vernacular)
What are formal regions and its other names?
-uniform, homogenous
-A geographical area that is linked by common traits like language or religion or economic prosperity or some geographic feature.
-tend to have pretty clear boundaries.
-Often used to study and organize geographical phenomena and understand patterns
What are some examples of formal regions?
Political regions, statistical regions, climate regions, vegetation regions, etc.
What are functional regions and its other names?
-nodal
-Organized not on shared traits but on a shared function.
-There will be a central location, a node, which that shared activity is carried out in.
-At times these regions will not have clear borders.
What are some examples of functional regions?
Economic regions, transportation regions, communication regions, etc.
What are perceptual regions and its other names?
-Vernacular
-Regions that are defined by people’s shared beliefs and feelings about themselves.
-The borders are very vague.
-Show a strong sense of regional identity
What are some examples of perceptual regions?
Southern States, Rust Belt, Bible Belt, etc.
