What is a physical landscape?
Refers to every feature of the natural environment that is visible to the eye
What is a cultural landscape?
Describes how a natural landscape has been modified by humans in a way that reflects their culture
What are some characteristics of cultural landscapes?
agricultural/industrial practices, religious/linguistic characteristics, sequent occupuence, traditional/postmodern architecture, NOT clothing/people
What is traditional architecture?
Describes a method of building that uses local materials found close to the building site and that reflect the needs of the people
What is sequent occupance?
The evidence that is left by past generations. This allows us to see a change in ideas and cultural norms.
What is postmodern architecture?
Intended to make buildings more culturally expressive using both form and function.
Ethnicity vs Race
-A quality of a people that binds them together including a shared language and cultural heritage
-A group of people that are categorized based on physical characteristics
How does culture shape space?
Attitude Towards Ethnicity: Multiple Chinatowns spread throughout America
Gender Roles/Norms: Women entering the workforce, childcare centers, etc.
Indigenous Communities/Land: Reservations, Forced Migration, Discrimination
