What are agricultural subsidies?
A financial incentive or payment that is given by the government to farmers. (Goal is to promote the production of certain products or promote certain practices).
What is irrigation?
The practice of applying controlled amounts of water to arable land to help grow crops using pipes, ditches, or sprinklers.
What are dikes?
Barriers used to regulate/hold back water
What are polders?
A piece of low-lying land reclaimed from the sea or a river and protected by dikes, especially in the Netherlands.
What is biodiversity?
The variety of living things in a particular area. (Includes types of animals, plants, etc.)
What is food insecurity?
The lack of secure access to sufficient amounts of safe and nutritious food.
What is a food desert?
An urban or rural community that lacks access to affordable, healthy, and fresh food. (People typically have to travel long distances to reach a grocery store, lack their own personal vehicle, live in an impoverished community, and often rely on fast food restaurants/convenience stores for food.)
What are community-supported agriculture?
A system of farming where consumers directly support local farmers by purchasing shares or subscriptions from the farmer in advance of the growing season.
What are food miles?
The distance food is transported from the producer to the consumer
Responsible for ~6% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions
What is urban farming?
Small scale farms located in urban and/or suburban areas that cultivate different agricultural products
What is organic farming?
Farming that focused on producing food with natural methods without different chemical fertilizers, pesticide, growth hormones, antibiotics, or GMOs.
Less costly to grow
May have questionable standards and sustainability
What are fair trade practices and products?
Allow consumers to directly purchase from the people who created the product or the farmer who produced the food
What are value-added crops?
Agricultural products that have been processed in a way that increases their overall value in either cost or quality.
Example: Jams, Cotton-candy grapes, etc.
What is aquaculture?
The rearing of aquatic animals and organisms
What are positives and negatives of aquaculture?
Could rebuild species (+)
Could treat sewer and wastewater (+)
Could lead to overfishing (-)
Can lead to loss of biodiversity (-)
Can change the landscape for marine life (-)
Can lead to pollution (-)
