What is a failed state?
A state that no longer has a functioning government. (The government can no longer provide its basic duties and loses authority over the land).
Example: Syria
What are ethnic nationalist movements?
When a cultural group wants to separate or wants control over themselves based on a specific ethnicity or nationality
What are some centrifugal forces in states?
-Uneven Economic Development: Inequalities between parts of states. Can cause frustration and divisions within states.
-Large Divisions in Cultural Traits: Languages and religions. Negative stereotypes and even discrimination can be seen on the rise.
-Corruption and abuse of power in the government
-Linguistic differences in a state

Strong sense of patriotism
Variety of economic and social opportunities
Lack of corruption and discrimination
