What is population density?
The amount of people in an area.
What is the burgess concentric model? What are the zones?
A circle with five different rings
Center circle: Central Business District.
Second ring: Zone of Transition. Lower income residents along with many industries.
Third ring: Zone of Independent Workers Homes. Traditionally older homes who house residents who work in the CBD.
Fourth ring: Zone of better residents. Newer homes that are more dispersed. Includes single family homes with backyards.
Outermost ring: Commuter’s Zone. Includes people who live out of the city’s limits. People who live in this zone have to commute into the city to work.
What are some failures of the burgess concentric model?
-This model is becoming outdated due to globalization, changes in how products are manufactured, and due to gentrification and urban renewal policies.
-Fails to consider de-institualization, suburban fight, and use of cars.
-Fails to consider race and ethnicity on land-use.
What is the Hoyt sector model? What are the zones?
This model is based on activities done by different economic classes. A bigger focus on transportation.
Central business district. Transportation and industry. Low-class residential. Middle-class residential. High-class residential.
What are failures of the Hoyt sector model?
Outdated.
More people have moved to boomburbs and suburban areas, making more companies move out of the CBD.
Fails to account for multiple CBD’s.
Fails to take in account race and ethnicity.
What is the multiple nuclei model?
This model tries to explain how cities changed due to advancements in transportation and technology.
What are some characteristics of the multiple nuclei model?
-This model has multiple business districts.
-Each different node attracted different people, companies, and services.
-People will go to a node that they are most affiliated with based on their profession.
What are the zones of the multiple nuclei model?
CBD, outlying BD, low/medium/high class residential, residential/industrial suburb , light/heavy manufacturing
What is the galactic model?
This model looks at a post-industrial city
This city’s economy does not focus on manufacturing, but instead has become more service-based.
What are some goods and bads about the galactic model>
- Accounts for advancements in technology AND transportation. (+)
- Accounts for the fact that people do live outside of city bounds. (Edge cities) (+)
- Dependent on cars (-)
- Assumes there is enough space for the sprawl of suburbs and edge cities (-)
What are the zones of the galactic model?
Central city. Suburban residential area, shopping ,all. Industrial district, office park. Service center, airport, combined employment and shopping center
What is the Latin American city model?
This model shows the impact of European colonization in Latin America to the day.
What are some characteristics of the Latin American city model?
-Plazas, churches, and grid patterns were heavily focused on by European conquistadors.
-The zone of maturity is a zone that consists of older buildings.
-Lower and middle income families are found in the zones of In Situ Accretion and Squatter Settlements.
-The disamenity zone shows high levels of extreme poverty. These areas will lack basic public services such as sewer systems, heat, etc.
What is a con about the Latin American city model?
Fails to differentiate commercial or industrial land use
What are informal settlements?
Residential areas that have been built with legal authorization. Often lack basic infrastructure, services, and legal protection.
