What is income inequality?
Refers to the unequal distribution of wealth and income within a society.
What are some effects of income inequality?
-Can lead to social and economic divisions
-Can undermine social cohesion
-Can reduce economic growth
What are some effects of employment for women?
-Job opportunities
-Healthcare status
-Higher education
-Specialized jobs
-Improvement in social status
-Less traditional gender roles
What are affects of women and economic development?
-Increased participation in the workforce
-Changes in family dynamics/traditional gender roles
-Increase in economic independence/economic opportunities
-Changes in societal attitudes towards women/breaking gender norms
What are some barriers for women?
-Gender Pay Gap: on average paid less for the same jobs men do
-Discrimination: unequal pay, limited opportunities, harassment, and violence
-Lack of Education: This is also tied in with a lack of access to education.
-Unpaid Care Work: Limits abilities to participate in paid employment, pursuing education, and training opportunities.
-Limited Credit/Financial Resources: difficult for women to start their own business or invest in their own education/training.
-Stereotypes/Societal Standards: discouraged from pursuing certain fields or leadership roles that are “for men”
What are microloans?
Small loans that are provided to individuals or small businesses.
How can microloans help women?
-These loans can be especially useful for women in developing countries
-Helps with economic independence and empowerment
What are MDGs?
Millennium Development Goals (MDGs); A set of eight goals created in 2015 by the United Nations to promote development
What are some examples of MDGs?
Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women
Goal 5: Improve maternal health
Goal 8: Develop a global partnership for development
