What is fertility rate?
Indicates a population’s ability to have children.
What is CBR?
Crude Birth Rate: The number of live births per 1,000 people in a year
What is TFR?
Measures the average number of children one woman will have during her child bearing years (15-49 years old)
What is the replacement level of fertility?
2.1
What is mortality rate?
An indication of a population’s rate of deaths
What is the CDR?
Number of deaths per 1,000 people
What is the IMR?
The number of children who die before they reach the age of one, per 1,000 live births.
What is the replacement rate?
The number of children a couple would need to have to replace themselves. This would keep the population stable.
What is the NIR?
Natural Increase Rate
The percentage of growth or decline in a population excluding immigration and emigration; essentially birth rates minus death rates
What is the RNI?
Rate of Natural Increase
The crude birth rate minus the crude death rate.
Doesn’t account for population growth or decline due to migration, only people being born and dying.
What is doubling time?
The amount of time it will take for a population to double if current growth remains the same.
What is the rule of 70 and what is it used for?
70 divided by the annual percentage growth rate
-Used to find doubling time
What are pronatalist/anti-natalist policies?
-Policies that encourage reproduction
-Seek to reduce the number of babies born
What social/cultural factors affect growth/decline?
Religion, Gender Norms, etc.
What economic factors affect growth/decline?
Can determine rates of reproduction and migration
