research support for the halo effect

A

P: one strength for the halo effect is that it has research support
E: palmer and peterson 2012 found that physically attractive people were rated more politically knowledgeable and competent than unattractive people
E: this has implications and suggests politicians might be elected because they are considered physically attractive enough by voters
L: this shows that the halo effect can be observed in real life situations

Q

limitation - does everyone find physical attractiveness important?

A

P: one limitation is that not everyone finds physical attractiveness important
E: those who scored highly on the MACHO scale (sexist attitudes), were more influenced by physical attractiveness when judging likeability from a photograph and basic biographical data (towhey 1979)
E: ppl who scored lower were less sensitive to the influence of physical attractiveness thus individual differences play a role in how important an attaractive partner is in choosing partners
L: so effect of phys att can be moderated by other factors and may not be as significant in relatioship formation for all partners
