ending of a relationship isnt a one off event but a process that takes time and goes through 4 distinct phases
list 4 phases
1) intrapsychic phase
2) dyadic phase
3) social phase
4) grave dressing phase
explain each stage having a threshold
- each stage has a threshold where perception of relationship changes
- partner may reasses and halt breakdown of relationship
- or they cross the threshold and move on to the next stage of the model
explain intrapsychic stage
threshold - i cant stand this anymore indicating something must change
- partner becomes dissatisfied, will brood on reason for this and will focus on partners short comings
- tend to keep this to themselves but may share their thoughts w a trusted friend weighing up pros and cons of continuing
explain dyadic phase
threshold - i would be justified in withdrawing
- once a partner concludes their justfied in ending relationship they discuss with their partner airing out any disatisfactions about equity or comitment for example
-phase may vary in length, in anxiety or hostility
explain social phase
threshold - disatisatisfied partner concludes i mean it
- will seek support particularly from join friends
- friends may be encouraged to choose a side or try to prevent break up, offer advice
- once news is public its usually the point of no return
explain grave dressing phase
threshold - its now inevitable
- both sides construct their version of why relationship broke down
- minimising their faults and maximising their partners
- signifies closure of relationship and readiness to start a new one
