cognitive treatments of depression - ao3 Flashcards
strength of cbt - research support
p- a strength of cbt is the research support behind it
e - research by march et al 2007 found that cbt was as effective as antidepressants in treating depression, there were 327 adsolecents in the study with a depression diagnosis. compared the effectivness of cbt, antidep and a combo of the 2
after 36 weeks 81% of the group w antidepressant,81% of the cbt and 86% of the combo group had significantly improved
e= this demonstrates the effectivness of cbt in treating dep suggesting it works well alongside medication as a combo therapy and may even be more effective than just one or the other
l; so there is evidence supporting cbts effectivness
limitation - suitability for diverse clients
p- cbt may not be suitable for all clinets, it could be ineffective fir more severe cases of depression or learning difficulties
e- this is bc cbt requires motivstion which may not be present in those w severe dep as they wont be able to engage in the session or do hw. will be unable to effectively deiver future sessions in becks ct as no evidence to say clinets thoughts are incorrect so not reinforcing pos belifs
this is hard cog work so could be diffilcult for those w LD whereby sturmey 2005 says psychotherapy of any kind is unsuitable for those w learnfing diff
e - thus suggests cbt only appropriate for some clients not all which reduces its effectivness
counterpoint for suitability for diverse clients (cog treatments for OCD)
p- more recent ev challeges idea that cbt not suites to sever dep or those w ld
e- lewis and lewis 2016 found cbt was as effective as antidep and bt for severe dep
and taylor et al 2008 concluded that when used approp cbt is effective for ppl w ld
e - thus cbt may be suites to wider range of ppl than initaly thought
l - so thus cbt can be effective to all clients
limiation of cbt - relapse rates
p - although cbt seems to be quite effective in tackling the symptoms of dep it may not tacke the undelying cause which could explain concerns over high relapse rates where there were concerns over how long the benefits last
e - study by ali et al 2017 suggested long term outcomes not as good at what was once thought
he asessed depression is 439 clinets for 12 months follwoing cbt
42% relapsed within 6 months
53% relapsed within a year
this could imply cbt needs to be repeated periodically
thus a big drawback of cbt in terms of clinets needing continual sessions or risk relapse
